Youth is wasted on the young

As a teacher, and also through my own experiences as a pupil and in life generally, I have long thought that youth is, indeed, wasted on the young. People don’t appreciate school, the gift of learning, or education until way way afterwards. You learn in a different way when you are older. You appreciate it more, are more motivated and know so much more about life.

Younger people often think they are too old, too fat, too wrinkly, too hideous to wear a bikini/go without makeup/have sex with the lights on. Until they look back twenty years later and realise how beautiful they actually were and that they wasted the prime of their life agonising about things no one else even noticed.

I really enjoyed the Brad Pitt movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button where he was born as an old man and got younger as time passed.

That is why this quote really spoke to me.
