I have been thinking of things that I have heard over the years that have helped me grow as a person…
- Where you are in a year is a reflection of the choices you make right now
- When you are a manager, think always of the ‘bus factor’. That is, what would happen if employee x was hit by a bus
- Just because someone carries burdens well does not mean they are not heavy
- If someone tells you that you hurt them, you don’t get to decide that you didn’t
- Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It’s not pie
- If you don’t heal what hurt you, you will bleed on people who didn’t cut you
- Think of the four Fs when determining whether you owe anyone anything. Are they a good Friend? Are they Feeding you (emotionally, physically)? Are they Financing you? And are you …intimate? If the answer is no to all or most of these, you don’t owe the person anything. This one has helped me gain the strength to say no to people who may be seeking to take advantage of me
- If you meet an asshole in the morning, you met an asshole. If you meet assholes all day, you’re the asshole. Alternately, if sh** follows you everywhere, maybe it is time to look under your own shoes
- If you have a problem with authority, self-employ. Otherwise, learn to deal with supervisors like an adult
- It is okay for you to believe what you believe. It is not okay however, for you to insist that everyone else believe the same as you
- I can handle if someone has troubles from your past, but patterns prove points
- We don’t buy things with money. We buy things with hours from our life
- Leave the small fights to the small fighters
- Let people do what they want to do, so you can see what they would rather do. That will answer all the questions you have
- If anything is worth doing, it’s worth doing poorly. Type A people often work themselves into the ground doing things perfectly. But sometimes if you are too tired to brush your teeth for 2 minutes, you can brush them for ten seconds. If you feel too ill to have a shower, you can splash water on your face and change your pyjamas. If you are too tired to go for a run, you can go for a walk
